OpenID Every day there will be used various online services with different usernames and passwords on the Internet. Which user is not to face a choice before it register to an Internet service and choose a password, or to remember a password which it has entered weeks or months before? OpenID offers through its open specification corrective, and allows as well as Single Sign-On (SSO) to OpenID supporting Internet services. In addition OpenID offers the possibility to integrate easier strong 2- and 3-factor authentication methods. On this way this solution offers high security and independence of Internet services to the user. Additional Information on OpenID: OpenID Foundation: http://www.openid.net OpenID Europe: http://www.openideurope.eu OpenID Switzerland: http://www.openideurope.eu/community/switzerland/ General: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenID OpenID & SAML The OpenID specification is devoted to this problem in versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 and is getting more and more acceptance in the Internet. In what differs OpenID from other specifications such as SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language)? The main difference is that OpenID specifies the protocol slimmer, and uses URL-based parameters instead of XML parameters. In addition, OpenID specifies the implemenation pattern of transfer of authenticated identities in an enormous depth without going into detail how users are identified. That does not mean that OpenID replaces the implemenation patterns of SAML. SAML has still great importance in combination with the interoperability of specific authentication solutions. SAML is a very powerful specification and can be used for many Internet- and Business-to-Business (B2B) authentication and authorization solutions. On the Internet there are not only the various implementation patterns in demand, but also in some specific use cases OpenID can be the perfect solution.
